Food For The Soul

People have different tastes in music. Some like classical, pop, rock. Others love jazz, R&B and dance. Sure, music transcends all language barriers and sometimes, act as an inspiration because we all interpret the music we hear in our own way.
For me, the first thing that attracts me to a new song would be the melody. The next thing that I look out for then, are the lyrics.
Why, you might ask.

This video above features 14 various female artists who performed the song ‘Just Stand Up’ live, on Fashion Rocks 2008. This song was created specially in support of Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), a fund-raising foundation to further cancer research.
The first time I heard this song, it gave me goosebumps.
This is not just another ordinary pop song that talks about love. It is one that rallies artists to sing and gives courage to victims of cancer. The lyrics in the song speak straight to the heart.
The lyrics are communicative, cause they tell those stricken with cancer to keep fighting the battle and not succumb to it. We’ll never understand the pain and struggles that they have to go through.. emotionally and physically.
Through this song, we tell them that they are not alone in the fight against cancer. They need to find strength from within to carry on.

“If the mind keeps thinking you've had enough

But the heart keeps telling you don't give up

Who are we to be questioning, wondering what is what

Don't give up

Through it all, Just Stand Up.”

Moreover, the star-studded cast helps SU2C to garner attention from the public. With greater awareness, more people can band together to further promote this cause to treat cancer.

I have always thought that music holds the key to memories, and emotions. How true.
Music moves.

great song. When i was watching the video, there was something about Mary J Blige as she sang.. i just got reminded of another deeply moving (to me) song by Kelly Rowlands. Titled 'Stole', its lyrics talk about lives being stolen, in a metaphoric sense. I used to think that the song was about school shootings, but revisiting that song, after reading your post, allowed me to watch the video and perhaps have another perspective to view it from.

In any case, I agree with you about the power of songs. Especially when some songs speak about eternal themes of hope and the like. R Kelly's I believe I can Fly never fails to inspire me, as with Michael Bolton's The Distance.

Other times, songs serve as a ... chronemic device of sorts. Sometimes when i get together with old friends, we reminisce about songs during "those times". Or when an old song plays on the radio... you hit the nail on the head, Trix. Sometimes music and songs do hold memories.

yea . I agree with what you say . Songs are the best way to convey messages in certain contexts .

In my opinion songs are great tools of both verbal communications and non-verbal ones . Verbal in the sense lyrics can tell us directly the message the songwriter wanted to convey . And non-verbal through the way the singer performed the song if its live , and the melody itself , as melodies affects our emotions and feelings .

It's a pity that they have quite a number of such events. When i watched it, i couldn't help but feel that, oh, this is just another of THOSE events. but i must say that the song was nice.
I liked seeing all the different genres of singers banding together to sing the same song for a good purpose.

Music does move the soul. It's been ingrained in our cultures for so long, even babies know how to appreciate the sounds that they hear..

I have a T-shirt that I bought that says 'Music is love in search of a word'. This is true in the sense that music IS love as it brings happiness and hope to people. Lyrics help to complement the emotions felt by the music and adds meaning to the song.

The nonverbal cues such as music can stir up feelings of joy, sadness and even anger in people. When the lyrics and the singer's voice come in, it helps to add to these feelings and the underlying messages in the lyrics are sometimes so powerful it can inspire people.

Like tony han, I also get touched by certain songs. I love to listen to Josh Groban as he never fails to inspire me with his songs in his first CD. A particular song ' You Raise Me Up' by Josh Groban is the song I always tune in to when I'm feeling down. (:

You know how sometimes you listen to a song and you just feel happy for no reason? (Think Jason Mraz!) Or, you could be listening to a song in a foreign language and still feel sad. What you said is very true.

But what I think makes the music evoking, is the conviction of the singer and the meaning put into it.

And yes, music makes me very happy. :)
